Sub surface laser engraved crystal, also called laser etched crystal, is the process of burning an image below the
surface of an optically perfect piece of crystal using a highly focused laser beam. Guided by a computer, the laser
burns hundreds, or even thousands of dots, without disturbing the crystal surface, resulting in a 2d, 2 1/2d or 3d image
that appears to be floating inside the crystal.
The creation of 3D laser engraved crystals utilize high-energy laser beams to produce a phenomenon known as multi-
photon absorption within optically perfect crystal. This phenomenon, which uses the electromagnetic wave of the laser
beam known as coherent light creates an electric field greater than 10 million volts per centimeter. When the laser
beam is focused within the interior of the subject crystal the energy creates unattached electrons also known as “free”
electrons. These “free” electrons, accelerated by the electric field created by the laser beam causes the high energy
electrons to collide with atoms and ions in the focus area. As the process continues it causes a chain reaction and
produces about 1 million trillion free electrons per cubic centimeter in about 1 trillionth of a second. The laser then
emits a short pulse beam of a few billionths per second and produces a tiny micro crack. The laser head then align and
position tens of thousands of additional micro cracks to create 2 or 3 dimensional images. Although, the laser
generates power densities of 10 billion watts per square centimeter, the surface of the crystal is not damaged due to
the highly transparent nature of optically perfect crystal. The resulting images appear to be suspended within the
crystal.
These unique laser engraved images include pictures of people, pets, cars, boats, planes, buildings, national
monuments, birds, animals, reptiles, company logos as well as text. All we need is a digital picture, and within 4 to 7

2D Image Laser Engraving
A custom 2D face or other 2D image can be laser engraved inside a crystal shape of your choice. All we need is a
digital image (see acceptable formats listed below) from a digital camera or a traditional photograph scan using a
common image scanner. We can etch almost any 2D image inside a crystal. The file formats we accept are: JPG, GIF,
TIF, and BMP We can laser engrave multiple people, full body shots, buildings, picture of your home, pets or almost
anything. As you will see below, the side view of a 2D etch is not very deep. The frontal view is highly detailed.
2 1/2D Image Laser Engraving
The 2 1/2D laser etched image process is a tremendous improvement over the traditional 2D process. A standard 2D
laser etching typically has 3 layers. Our 2 1/2D laser crystal process utilizes special computer routines that cause a
traditional photo to have up to 8 layers of laser burns. The image appears to have a 3D effect inside the crystal. The
2 1/2D process also only needs a scan of a standard photograph or an image from a digital camera. In the 2 1/2D
engraving process, dark colors in a photo have fewer layers, lighter colors have more layers. The result is very
detailed laser etched image that defies description, and is unmatched by any other US supplier.
3D Image Laser Engraving
The 3D laser etched crystal image can be viewed from all sides. The 3D stock images in our Image library are
complete 3D images. As you rotate the crystal, you will see a full 360 degree view of the image floating inside the
crystal. A 3D head or bust can be created using your traditional photo. When looking from the back of the crystal,
you will see a reverse of the front of the face. At this time, we can only laser etch the human head or bust. Send your
